Regional Exercise LONGREACH (Nuku'alofa, Tonga)

Regional Exercise LONGREACH

04 Aug 202507 Aug 2025

Operational planners and disaster responders from Pacific military forces and non-government organisations gathered in Tonga for the fourth annual Regional Exercise LONGREACH, a humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) exercise. The objectives of the exercise focussed on:

  • Request procedures for support from international partners, including reception and integration
  • Unity of coordination and command
  • Tonga National Disaster Risk Management Office and SPDMM capabilities to collectively plan for and respond to regional natural disasters.

Pacific Response Group members also participated in the exercise, demonstrating a growing normalisation of the capability in regional activities. Regional Exercise LONGREACH is focused on building closer relations among SPDMM nations’ military disaster response planning functions, between those militaries and civilian disaster response agencies. Regional Exercise LONGREACH provides an opportunity for participants to discuss strategies to enhance interoperability for HADR tasks.
